GENERAL DESCRIPTION / PRIMARY PURPOSE
The intern will assist with the development and implementation of an orientation safety training course for new employees in agriculture operations, farming, and Value-Added Plant operations. Proper training helps workers understand their rights, gives an overview of specific hazards to which they may be exposed, and provides the knowledge and skills necessary to do their work safely and avoid putting themselves or others at risk. Updated safety resources will improve the training experience and positively impact Dole Fresh Vegetables' safety culture.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND TASKS / DUTIES OF THE POSITION
• Learn Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) standards relevant to Dole Fresh Vegetables
• Participate in safety audits
• Review safety incident metrics
• Evaluate current safety training content
• Assist with development and implementation of updated safety training course
• Participate in regular safety topic meetings
• Assist in promoting safe work practices and working conditions per all federal, state and local regulations
• Create and deliver a final presentation to the President and executive team of Dole Fresh Vegetables.
• Other duties as assigned
INTERNSHIP DETAILS
• Summer 2023, 12-week internship
• 100% onsite (not a remote internship)
• Pay Rate: $20 per hour for undergraduates, and starting at $21 per hour for graduate students
• No relocation or housing assistance provided
Required Skills
JOB SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES
• Intermediate skills in Excel, Word and PowerPoint
• Basic Statistical Analysis Skills
• Valid California driver's license
• Strong Organizational Skills and Communication Skills preferred
• Video and photo editing experience a plus but not required
• Bi-lingual, Spanish/English is preferred
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
• While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit for long periods of time; use hands to handle or feel objects, tools, or controls; talk or hear.
• Ability to maneuver around an array of equipment, bend, stoop, climb stairs, lift up to 25 pounds, identify and distinguish colors, and work in a cold environment.
• Ability to walk on uneven ground
• Ability to work in various weather conditions.
WORK HOUR & TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS
• Full time, 40-hour workweek, no overtime expected
• Travel to and from various Dole facilities and field locations in the Salinas valley using a Dole vehicle or intern's personal vehicle
Required Experience
EDUCATION LEVEL AND FIELDS OF STUDY
Fall 2023 rising Junior, Senior, or Graduate Student obtaining a degree in Environmental Health & Safety, Occupational Safety, or a related field.
