COVID-19 Roomkey program

Roomkey motels ending program in Sacramento County, affecting hundreds of unsheltered residents

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Over the next three months, Project Roomkey will come to end, forcing hundreds of people experiencing homelessness to find new options.

The program Project Roomkey was started at the beginning of the pandemic to provide emergency shelters for those experiencing homelessness during the pandemic. Gov. Gavin Newsom’s administration released funding for several motels to be used for housing.

As virus cases come down, the Department of Human Resources cited a decline in the need for COVID-19 prevention.

The program currently houses 333 people. FEMA took over the project's funding over a year ago, but now, funding will end on March 30. A quarter of Roomkey residents have been housed in the motels for over a year.

Staff have been and will continue to, find permanent housing for the over 300 people impacted. The La Quinta Inn River District will end March 15, the Vagabond Inn will end April 15 and the Comfort Inn will end May 31.
