Assembly strikes down GOP effort to end California’s COVID-19 state of emergency

The California Assembly voted Thursday morning to keep in place Gov. Gavin Newsom’s COVID-19 state of emergency, striking down a GOP effort led by Assemblymember Kevin Kiley.

Kiley was one of the prominent Republicans who tried to replace Newsom in the recall election.

Several California state senate and assembly members gathered on the front steps of the Capitol on Thursday before the vote to demand the end of the order.

After the governor’s extension of the order in the fall, California has been under a state of emergency since March 4, 2020.

Kiley joined KCRA 3 to speak more about the order and why some state leaders were calling for its end.
